Chapter Eighteen
I have told you this tale has its beginnings in many places leading to the houses I saw and told you of on Dream Street, to this town called Place land.I cannot see the future, but I think this is where I will be born. My mother has just arrived here.
Most of the inhabitants of Placeland call it Place. This is not a large town, the population is mainly older people because most of the young people leave after high school or, getting old enough, seek some other place. Place is large enough to have two banks and a few small but adequate department stores. There are two shoe stores, one for the elite and high middle class, one for the general working middle class and poor. It has a few good restaurants with the same distinctions, several cafés, and numerous small drinking places.
The post office is situated almost in the middle of town near the court-house,a place where people meet and pass time in friendly conversation. A block or so from the post office are two large markets, across the street from each other, in unfriendly competition. Several small grocery stores are scatteredthroughout the town and suburbs for convenience. The one pharmacy is large and contains general notions departments and the only bookstore in town. The hospital is nearby.
The Striver River separates the main business section from one of the slightly smaller, poor or middle-class sections, sometimes called Otherplace, where Dream Street is. People who work in town can drive or walk over the short bridge across Striver River. There are no businesses in Otherplace, exceptfor two small grocery stores about two miles apart and one little bootleg liquor house.
I love the Striver River. It is a full, swift-flowing river fed by many creeks, underground springs, and other inlets. It flows clear and glittering through the town, full of flitting and jumping fish. It nourishes its banks so the earth is rich with everything growing lush and abundantly there. Pine trees, spruces, willows, and many other beautiful trees with a multitude of colors and smells. They are home to a variety of beautiful birds and shelter many small creatures.
There are places where the river widens and becomes shallow with rocks so wide you can cross over on them from the town to the other side where Dream Street sits in front of the woods. On one side of the bridge road, a few houses are scattered throughout the miles of woods. On the other side, farther along a dense strip of woodland, is the small railroad terminal.
The woodland gives an impression of broad depth, yet the highway is just beyond at the base of the hills. The hills seem to stretch miles and miles away, following the river’s course. The train station, two miles from town and about a mile up the river, transports people and goods in and out of Place. For the young-at-heart and the seekers there is a big little city, Elysee City, full of the latest exciting things, about forty minutes away by train.
